2010 is going to be a very busy but exciting year for all of us.  In order to deliver an event of the highest standard the Championship partners have come together to ensure that everyone taking part in the event enjoys the very best experience.  A great deal has happened since my appointment in October 2009.  This is the most recent newsletter filled with updated arrangements and details already put in place which hopefully you will find useful.  We are all delighted to be hosting the Championships here in Glasgow and will work hard to ensure that you enjoy your stay with us.

Glasgow

The City of Glasgow is Scotland’s largest city and your destination for the 2010 CPISRA European Football 7-a-side Championships. Glasgow is a great city; it’s vibrant, lively and steeped in rich culture.  Glasgow is alive with an excitement you will sense as soon as you arrive. There is plenty to do and see in Glasgow with art galleries and museums allowing access free of charge, excellent shopping, a thriving cinema culture, and of course plenty of space to enjoy football… Scotland’s National Game. The city houses three excellent football Stadia in Hampden Park, Ibrox Stadium and Parkhead Stadium along with 20 museums and art galleries. Glasgow enjoys an excellent reputation for the staging of concerts, conferences and events and is known world wide as the ‘dear green place’ due to the number of beautiful gardens and parks within the city. We hope your visit will show you the best of Scotland and what our City has to offer.

The Championships

The closing date for applications to participate in the 2010 CPISRA European Championships has now passed. Initially nine countries applied to participate in the Championships.  CPISRA granted permission to the Local Organising Committee to seek a guest nation’s participation in the event.  Consequently, I have great pleasure confirming that our friends from way down under, Australia, will also participate in the Championships bringing the total number of participating teams to ten.  Take note however that Australia’s participation in the event will have no impact on rankings.

The 2010 CPISRA European Football 7 a side Championships will consist of the following participating nations:

  • Australia
  • Denmark
  • England
  • Finland
  • Republic of Ireland
  • Russia
  • Scotland
  • Spain
  • The Netherlands
  • Ukraine

Athlete Village

Accommodation and catering provision has been secured at John Anderson Campus of Strathclyde University.  The University and its campus is right in the middle of the City close by Glasgow’s George Square and surrounding shopping precincts. More specific arrangements with the University will be progressed over the coming weeks and months prior to your arrival.  Have a look here.

Match and Training Facilities

Toryglen Regional Football Centre will host all training and match day activity. Toryglen boasts a first class indoor synthetic grass pitch with a seating gantry for 700 spectators.   All matches will take place on the indoor pitch which is built to the highest standard. Outside the main indoor arena there are a further three outdoor synthetic pitches where all training sessions will take place.  Toryglen Football Centre is an excellent facility and is located close by Scotland’s National Stadium, Hampden Park.  You can have a look at Toryglen on the web here.

There are many attractions in Glasgow and a number of these will be outlined to you later to assist in the preparations for your visit and your daily itinerary. A must see, on Glasgow’s doorstep is Loch Lomond and the Trossachs however.  This beautiful countryside is just half an hour from the City Centre.  Enjoy magnificent scenery including Ben Lomond, forest walks and scenic resorts on the banks of the River Clyde and Ayrshire Coast.  Edinburgh too is only an hour’s drive away but well worth it to see Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile in all its glory!  You simply can’t miss the opportunity to soak up the atmosphere in Scotland’s great Capital.  There is loads to do and see there!
